Experience

Clive (Topsy) Toner

My sailing career began when I joined the Royal Navy in 1961, skippering craft such as Montague Whalers, 32ft Dipping Lug Cutters, 14ft RNSA, and Foreland Dinghies, later moving on to the Bosun Dinghy. By the mid seventies I was running courses for the Services Yacht Proficiency Scheme and in 1977/78 I was selected for the Whitbread Round the World Race. I have also taken part in several Fastnet Races, the 1979 race being the most memorable!

A change in sailing vessels gave me the opportunity to work with young people aboard the Sail Training Association schooners from 1979/82. One of the best jobs I can recall was a posting to Joint Services Sailing Centre, where I gained valuable experience training service personnel in the art of keeping a sense of humour when the going gets rough. I was discharged from the Navy in 1986 after a great career.

That same year I became owner and skipper of a sea angling vessel and continued in that line of work until May 1991. I then went to work with STV Astrid, sailing between the UK, Europe and the Caribbean. I was promoted to relief master in1993 and left the vessel in December1996.

1997 saw the start of a new career delivering the ships required for the making of the Hornblower TV series. I was the first Captain of the star of the show, the Grand Turk, and I also skippered Julia af Faaborg, the supporting star. I then moved onto work at Charlestown Shipyard, skippering the ‘Phoenix’ (Brig) and the ‘Earl of Pembroke’ (Barque).

From 1996-2008 I was the Senior Base Manager for a well known yacht charter company based in the UK.

My sailing career started with GB 14, Fireballs, and Flying Dutchmen dinghies, before joining the Royal Navy in 1975 when I began offshore sailing in the channel area, qualifying under the Services Yacht Proficiency Scheme. I gained a great deal of experience sailing in local club and offshore RORC events.

I was selected for the 77/78 Joint Services Whitbread Round the World Race and I also took part in several Fastnet Races, including the 79 race. I crewed aboard ‘Challenger’ in the 81/82 Whitbread Round the World Race and then went on to yacht deliveries worldwide. In the1983 season I started managing and skippering yachts, working from Turkish ports and cruising the Mediterranean.

From 1992 I was a freelance yacht skipper instructing RYA courses and running corporate events. During this period I was also involved with several yacht deliveries in the UK and the Mediterranean.

1996-2008 I was the Senior Base Manager for a well known yacht charter company based in the UK.
